Boxes Boxes and More Boxes (oh and just as many index cards)

Every year when Fall and Spring rolls around, it means for us, it is time to go through boxes of hand-me-downs for our little kids, go though boxes of last years clothes for our big kids and see what might still fit AND go through their closets and dressers to see what needs to be put away. With 5 kids this Fall, it was quite a task but we got it done (oh and how good it feels to have it checked off the list!).

This past Saturday afternoon we pulled all of the stored boxes that we needed for everyone and started going through them. We had the kids trying things on to see what fit and making piles all over the kitchen floor and bed rooms of things that didn't fit. And as we went through everything I made a list for everyone...an inventory, if you will! I wrote down how many shirts, pants, pj's, coats, etc that every one had that still fit and then off to the far right of the page made a list of what we needed to buy to fill in the gaps.

Over the years from the time our first baby was born, we started saving their out grown clothes that were still in good condition knowing that their would be a younger sibling to pass it on to. And over the years, I have tried a few different systems of sorting and organizing clothes- everything from storing them in large bags to boxes but the one thing about my system that never changed (even when their storage container type changed) was how I labeled them. Okay, well, that slightly changed too but I will get into that more in a minute. I have always labeled the containers with the gender and size, for example "Girls Newborn/0-3 months" that way I knew what container to pull when I needed to put something out grown away or find a bigger size for someone.

Now onto our most current system that we are loving and that made this past Saturday so much easier when it came time to start sifting through everyone's clothes.  A few months ago I read a book called Survival of the Busy Woman by Emily Barns. It changed the way we organized every closet in our house, let me tell you! Following the steps in the book, we applied the method to our kids hand-me-down clothes, too. We bought a huge stack of heavy duty bankers boxes at Walmart and started sorting all of our kids clothes into those boxes by gender and size. Once a box was full, it got a nice big easy to read label on one end of the box calling out the gender and size and it got a number along with the location the box was being stored. Once every single last article of clothing was in a box and labeled, I went back with 3"x5" index cards and labeled each card to match a box along with the number that I marked on the box, also. The point of the number and index card is to make it easier to find what you are looking for when the time comes to pull a box. For us, we are able to store all of the boxes at this point in our master bedroom closet so we know that is where they are at. I decided to go ahead a do the numbering and index card step anyways just in case we ever decide to split them up between different closets. This way it is all done and I don't have to go back and do that step later. I should also add since everything else we have in closets that made sense to put in a box also has a number and index card along with the location the box is stored (example Box 1- Photos      Craft Room Closet) I decided to jump up into the 300's and 400's for our boys and girls clothing boxes. We are no where near having that many boxes but figured that way I can keep all of the kids' clothing boxes in their own digits.

So there ya have it! That is how we keep clothes organized. And let me tell ya, it was a lot of work to get everything organized and on index cards but it really did save us a TON of money. All 5 of our kids have very short lists of cool weather clothing that they need. And let me add, they were all super excited to see some of their old favorites come back into rotation that still fit from last year!

Hope everyone is enjoying the cooler temps of Fall!

Happy Fall Y'all

When I first saw this cute owl on Pinterest, I knew I had to make it. I wanted it to be a 1st day of school gift bag for my kiddos but when that didn't happen, I decided it would be a perfect way to do a little something special to welcome Fall for my kids.

Let's get started shall we?

First things first, gather up your supplies:
I used a 3/4" punch for the black part of the eye and a 1-3/4" punch for the white part of the eye. Since the 1-3/4" punch is my largest, I traced a salsa jar lid for the largest size circle, which happened to be about 2-1/2" in diameter.
Gather up some pretty scrapbook paper and an old dictionary page along with orange and mustard card stock, adhesive, a paper cutter and scissors.
And an alphabet stamp set to stamp a greeting. If you don't have an alphabet stamp set, a black marker and your prettiest handwriting works great, too!
Cut the top of the brown paper sack  so it comes to a point like in the picture.
Cut a long oval shape out of your dictionary page leaving one end of the oval flat and adhere that to the bag.
Now just start layering all of those circles starting with the scrapbook paper...
 Then the 1-3/4" white circle...
Followed by the 3/4" black circle...
Cut a little diamond out of the orange card stock...
Stamp (or hand write) a greeting. Mine says "Happy Fall Y'all."
Once the bags are filled, just staple the to closed!
And that is it! Simple, huh?! I don't know exactly what I will fill the bags with but I'm thinking bubbles, a little candy, maybe some play dough stuff like that!

The first day of Fall is this Saturday!!! Are you ready?

For the Love of Flower Frogs...and other stuff

Last week was one of those weeks that fly by so fast you just don't know where the days go. That isn't always a bad thing but there was something about last week that just left me scratching my head wondering where-in-the-world did the time go? Most importantly, we did school and did it well.
That is what is most important so I guess I can't complain too much about everything else that didn't happen that I wished would have. Nothing major, just the house keeping kind of stuff that helps our family of 7 stay organized. We can make a mess of things fast but I know we can also get it cleaned up fast too if we work together. Today hasn't been the best of days around here. I think being stuck inside the past few days because of the storm that moved into central Texas and decided to stay-awhile has done everyone in. I don't blame them. The sun is coming out finally today but things are way too wet to go out and play. (Note to self: rain boots for EVERYONE!!!!)
I did have one little surprise today and it was a good one. Over the weekend my mom called and said she was cleaning out some cabinets at my grandfather's house (his health is declining pretty fast at this point) and had been tossing a lot of my great grandmother's floral arrangement supplies. She started describing these metal things to me and I immediately knew what she was talking about and said "I want them!!!" She couldn't understand why and said they were in the trash and would see if she could dig them out.
I got off the phone hoping that she'd dig into the gross trash to save these for me and she did! (After I called her back and told her she HAD to get them out! ha!)
I first heard about vintage flower frogs on Martha Stewart years ago and more recently saw them used as decor in Southern Living (or was it Better Homes and Gardens? Both my favorite magazines).
My mom thinks there might be a lot more under the stairs and said she will look once she starts cleaning stuff out from there. Can't wait to see if she finds more!
So her ya go, my vintage flower frogs sitting happy in a bowl. I don't know if they will stay in THIS bowl but for now, this is their home. I feel some fluffing coming on and I like the feeling! Oh, and I'm pretty sure they will sit on top of our TV stand. Right now it is an old black dresser that some day will be better converted- stay tuned for that... but don't hold your breath! There are other projects that will come first.
This was my great-grandparents house where my grandfather now lives. The bride? Yep, that was me on my wedding day! I love this picture!

Where to Start, Where to Start

It has been a while since I blogged, with birthday parties to plan and a school year to plan, I haven't had a lot of extra time. So here is a little recap!

We kicked off our summer with birthdays- mine and our oldest daughter's in May. She had a Princess party, of course and me (well, it isn't like I have a theme each year but this year was craving some crafting time so) a "rustic-vintage-theme."

After our birthdays came my husbands (with Mother's day and Father's day mixed in, too). His birthday is the day after 4th of July, which this year we happened to take a little road trip to my parents to play on the river, grill and head back home with very exhausted little children. (love that!)

Then came August! Both of our boys were born in August. One at the beginning of the month and the other at the end. I reeeeaallly wanted to do up their birthday's this year since last year I had some major morning sickness and wasn't able to give them a party every boy dreams of. Don't get me wrong, we celebrated but it was very low key.

Our little Henry wanted a Pirate themed party and Joshua wanted Fireman....until his momma showed him a blog post of a ice cream cone party complete with donuts in the am and games and ice cream decorating- you name it, this party had it, and we copied it all! With 5 little ones 6 years and under, it was nice not to have to think! ha!

Felt and fabric ice cream cone decoration- made a few extras for the kids to use as toy food
In the mist of planning the last party (our other two cuties have winter birthdays) we got our school year planned, papers run off for the WHOLE year- that feels good, had one last day at the river the day before labor day for some fun in the sun in chilly river water. It doesn't matter how hot it is, that river always feels cold going in. We had a brisket and baked bean BBQ along with baked potatoes, grilled corn and                chili con caso. Then back home again with very tired kids to enjoy our last day off before school start.

More to come later! Have a great rest of the week!
